The Andean Condor is a species of South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae and is the only member of the genus Vultur. The large birds of prey are native to the Andes mountains and adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America. They have one of the largest wingspans of all birds in the world - 10.5 feet or 3.2 meters. Males have a is a wattle on the neck and a large, dark red comb or caruncle on the crown of the head. Unlike most birds of prey, the male is actually larger than the female. The Andean Condor is mostly a scavenger, soaring over the mountains and valleys of the Andes, looking for carrion, such as deer or domestic animals like cows. While they can be found at nearly any elevation, they usually build their nests at elevations of up to 16,000 feet or 5,000 meters, usually in inaccessible rock ledges. The condor can live to be up to 100 years in captivity, which makes them one of the world's longest-living birds, with a lifespan of up to 100 years old in captivity. The Andean Condor is a national symbol of Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador. The Bearded Vulture - also called the Lammergeier or Lammergeyer - is a large bird of prey native to the rugged and mountainous regions from Europe through much of Asia and Africa. An adult bird is about 37–49 inches long (94–125 cm) with a wingspan of 7.6–9.3 ft (2.31–2.83 m). It weighs roughly 9.9–17.2 lb (4.5–7.8 kg.) Unlike many of the other vulture species, this bird does not have a bald head. But it does get most of it's food by scavenging. The Bearded Vulture is remarkable as it will take the bones of the dead animal far into the air and drop them on the rocks below to crack them open to expose the edible marrow. They will also feed on tortoises, and use the same technique to open the reptile's shell. The Egyptian Vulture - also called the White Scavenger Vulture or Pharaoh's Chicken - is a small Old World Vulture. It's the only member of the genus Neophron. It has a very large distribution from Southwestern Europe to Northern Africa and into India. Like other vultures, they are highly opportunistic feeders generally eating carrion along with other species of vultures. It will, however also hunt small mammals, reptiles and other birds. When eating bird eggs, it will employ tools to break the shell, such as small stones. This use of tools is very rare in the world of birds. The population of the species has declined considerably due to overhunting, accidental poisoning and collisions with power lines and is now considered endangered by the IUCN.
