Artist’s notes:

Crustaceans – specifically crabs – aren’t perhaps the first choice of subject matter for many of the wildlife illustrators out there. But after seeing images of the Sally Lightfoot Crab, I was inspired by the amazing coloration of the animal and I knew I had to draw it. Since then, I’ve added a few more crustaceans, including the toy-like Harlequin Shrimp, which is a favorite of mine (they have them in a tank at the California Science Museum and it’s always fun to see them.

I often see the purple shore crabs on the coastline of my adopted state of California, and at some point I hope to add more native crabs, and other crustaceans to the gallery here.  The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab isn’t technically a crab (it’s more closely related to scorpions, spiders and ticks) but I’ve included it here anyway as it is an ocean animal similar to crustaceans, at least in appearance.

It can also be found on the Pacific Ocean in Central America and the Gulf of Mexico. It has also been introduced into many areas it is not native to, due to it being a valuable food source. Adult Blue Crabs grow to just a little over nine inches (23 centimeters) and weigh roughly 1-2 pounds. (.5 to .9 kilograms) Blue Crabs are usually found in the brackish waters along the coastline, often in estuaries and other areas along shorelines. They feed on many different types of food, such as snails, mussels, fish, plants, and other smaller crustaceans. These invertebrates are very sensitive to environmental changes, and in some areas have seen steep reductions in number due to pollution and habitat loss. It is the offician crustacean of the state of Maryland in the US. Atlantic Horseshoe Crab – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Atlantic Horseshoe Crab:

The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab is a arthropod of the Xiphosura, which are a group of marine chelicerates, which are a group of animals that are mostly extinct, and in fact there are only four recent living members. Limulus polyphemus, along with the other horseshoe crabs, have hardly changed in millions of years. As the name makes clear, this arthropod is found in the coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean. They feed on mollusks, annelid worms, and other invertebrates. The crabs have three main parts to their bodies: the head region or 'prosoma,' the abdominal region or 'opisthosoma' and the spine-like tail or 'telson'. Horseshoe crabs have the rare ability to regrow limbs they have lost. Louisiana Crawfish – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Louisiana Crawfish:

The Louisiana Crawfish - also called a crayfish, swamp crayfish or even the amusing moniker "mudbug." This small crustacean is native range to freshwater swamps, marshes and flooded forests of the Gulf Coast from northern Mexico to the Florida panhandle, as well as inland, to southern Illinois and Ohio. It has also been deliberately introduced into other parts of the world including Europe, Asia and Africa. In some places they have expanded beyond the intended boundaries and are now threatening the native crayfish in those places. These invertebrates are extremely important as a food source, and most of Procambarus clarkii harvested in the world comes from Louisiana. For this reason the state designated this crawfish as the state crustacean in 1983. The population was severely impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, but since then their number have rebounded in most of the affect areas.
