Information about the American Bison:
The American Bison - more commonly referred to as the Buffalo (which is actually not closely related to) - is a large North American land mammal. The American Bison once roamed the grasslands of central North America in massive herds, numbering in the tens of thousands. Overhunting and development of their native lands in the 19th century pushed the bison to near extinction with the population dwindling to few a few hundred individuals. Towards the end of the 1800s there was a push for their preservation and aggressive breeding and reintroduction projects were started. Even after over a century there are thought to only be roughly 20,000 bison in the wild today. They are a protected species on federal lands, but in some areas they are raised for their meat.
