Dusky Dolphin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Dusky Dolphin:
The Dusky Dolphin is a marine mammal found in coastal waters in the Southern Hemisphere. The dolphin's range is patchy, with major populations around South America, southwestern Africa, New Zealand, and various oceanic islands, with some sightings around southern Australia and Tasmania. Its range also includes the Falkland Islands. They are particularly common from Peninsula Valdes to Mar de Plata. It seems to prefer cooler currents and inshore waters, but can also be found offshore. It feeds on a variety of fish and squid species. The Dusky Dolphin is known for its remarkable acrobatics, having a number of aerial behaviors. Compared to other dolphin species, is small to medium in length. There is significant variation in size among the different population areas. The largest dusky dolphins have been encountered off the coast of Peru, where they are up to 6 feet (210 cm) long and weighing 210 pounds (100 kg.) Dwarf Minke Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Dwarf Minke Whale:
The Dwarf Minke Whale is a marine mammal of the order Cetacea. There is some disagreement if this is indeed a separate species from the Minke Whale (it has not received an official scientific name at this time.) It is the second smallest of the baleen whales, growing to be about 23-35 feet long with the males a being little longer. Adults will generally weigh 3-5 tons. These cetaceans are widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, and can be found from the poles to the tropics. They occasionally will come near coastal areas, but it appears they tend to prefer the open oceans. Due to whaling these large ocean going mammals, were at one times considered endangered, but thanks to the ban on whaling - respected by most countries - their numbers have rebounded and their numbers are stable. Gray Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Gray Whale:
The Gray Whale is a large marine mammal weighing about 35-40 tons and growing to a length of 52 feet (16 meters). They are found in the eastern North Pacific Ocean, and there also a small and critically endangered population in the western North Pacific Ocean. They were once found in the Atlantic Ocean, but were hunted to extinction in that area, although there have been reported sightings that may mean they are attempting to repopulate those waters. The Gray Whale feeds on small animals called benthic crustaceans. Each October, these mammals make a long migration from the Berin and Chukchi sea, which begin to freeze with the onset of winter, southwards to the warm waters of the Gulf of California, where they will have their offspring. The Gray Whale is the only living species of the genus Physeter. They were given protection in 1949 by the International Whaling Commission and since then have not been hunted on a large scale and the whale is not considered endangered. Harbor Porpoise – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Harbor Porpoise:
The Harbor Porpoise is one of six species of porpoise. It is also one of the smallest marine mammals, growing to be about 4.5 - 6.5 feet long. As the name implies, this porpoise tends to stay in coastal areas or estuaries, although occasionally they venture up rivers and can be found hundreds of miles from the ocean. Harbor Porpoises feed on non-spiny fishes like herring, cod, whiting, squid, pollock, and sardines. They have been hunted for centuries, but the animal is not considered endangered - although it appears their overall numbers are declining. Hourglass Dolphin – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Hourglass Dolphin:
The Hourglass Dolphin is a small marine mammal of the Delphinidae Family. It inhabits Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. And for that reason, this dolphin is actually rarely seen by humans, and wasn't discovered and identified until 1824. In that time only a few specimens have ever been examined. These dolphins tend to travel in smaller pods of 5-10 adults, feeding on small fish and squid. These cetaceans are often seen in the company of Fin Whales and as early whalers used them as indicators that larger whales were in the area. Killer Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Killer Whale:
The Killer Whale or Orca (also sometime called the Blackfish or Seawolf) is the largest species of the dolphin family. Despite it's common name it is not a whale. It is found throughout the planet's oceans, from the polar regions to warm tropical seas. This mammal is a formidable predator, hunting in groups or "pods" generally consisting of related individuals. They are considered the top predator in the world's oceans. They are very large animals with males typically ranging from 19-26 feet and weighing in excess of 6 tons. Females are generally smaller. Orcas are the official state marine mammal of Washington. Long-Finned Pilot Whale – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Long-Fined Pilot Whale:
The Long-Fined Pilot Whale is one of three sub-species belonging to the genus Globicephala. It is a member of the oceanic dolphin family, although like the Orca or Killer Whale it is more whale-like in it's behavior. They are wide-ranging, medium-sized animals with a stocky, sturdy body. Their head has a large bulbous or square-like "melon". Females grow to be 12 feet long (3.7 meters). Males are somewhat larger at 15 feet (4.6 meters) An adult whale weighs 3,600 to 7,000 pounds (1.8 to 3.5 short tons.) They are sometimes called "Blackfish". There are two populations known of - one in the Northern Hemisphere in the North Atlantic, North and Baltic Seas. The other lives in Antarctic waters, covering the entire continental coastal areas. While their remote location makes guesses into their population difficult, these whales are protected under several international treaties.
