Artist's notes:
The Alligator Gar was completed on 6.11.2011. I've seen these prehistoric looking fish in many aquariums, including the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. I wasn't sure they would make very good subjects to illustrate, as they tend to just hang around in a pretty horizontal position. But then I was going through some old photos I took when the aquarium was in it's temporary home on Howard Street, and I found this excellent image to work from Buy a Digital DownloadAmerican Paddlefish – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the American Paddlefish:
The American Paddlefish is a large freshwater fish and member of the order Acipenseriformes, which are primitive ray-finned fish. It is also called the Mississippi Paddlefish or Spoonbill. They are found in the slow moving waters of the Mississippi River drainage system. They were once also found in Lake Erie, but it appears they have been extirpated from there. This very large Chondrostean fish can grow to a length of about 7 feet (220 centimeters.) It is one of two living species of paddlefish, although the other - the Chinese Paddlefish - is likely extinct. The American Paddlefish was once common in it's native environment, however due to habit loss and overfishing, the species is now considered vulnerable in most areas. It remains a popular sports fish and in areas where the populations are stable. Information about the Apache Trout:
The Apache Trout is a species of freshwater fish native to the clear, cool streams of the White Mountains in Arizona. It is one of two species of trout in the state of Arizona, with the other being the Gila Trout. They usually grow to anywhere between 6 and 24 inches (61 centimeters) weighing no more than 6 pounds. The Apache trout is native to the upper Salt River watershed (which includes the Black and White Rivers) and the upper Little Colorado River watershed. Due to habitat destruction and other environmental pressures - such as hybridization with the Rainbow Trout) the Apache Trout is considered critically endangered and conservation efforts are being made to assure the species does not go extinct. It is the state fish of Arizona. Information about the Arapaima:
The Arapaima - sometimes called the pirarucu or paiche, is a very large tropical freshwater fish native to the rivers, streams, lakes and floodplains and flooded rainforests of South America. It is considered a "living fossil" and is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, reaching lengths of over 6.6 feet (2 meters) and weighing over 220 pounds (110 kg.) Due to commercial fishing, as the Arapaima is a much sought after foot fish, very few large specimens can be found in the wild today. It is a top predator in it's environment feeding on other fish, crustaceans and even small mammals that might venture too close to the water. Because it breathes air, it is especially successful in hunting other fish when the waters recede, trapping other fish reliant on oxygen in the water. Deprived of their air they become sluggish and disoriented, making them easy prey for the Arapaima.
