Arapaima – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Arapaima:

The Arapaima - sometimes called the pirarucu or paiche, is a very large tropical freshwater fish native to the rivers, streams, lakes and floodplains and flooded rainforests of South America. It is considered a "living fossil" and is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, reaching lengths of over 6.6 feet (2 meters) and weighing over 220 pounds (110 kg.) Due to commercial fishing, as the Arapaima is a much sought after foot fish, very few large specimens can be found in the wild today. It is a top predator in it's environment feeding on other fish, crustaceans and even small mammals that might venture too close to the water. Because it breathes air, it is especially successful in hunting other fish when the waters recede, trapping other fish reliant on oxygen in the water. Deprived of their air they become sluggish and disoriented, making them easy prey for the Arapaima. The largest Archelon fossil, found in the Pierre Shale of South Dakota in the 1970s, measures more than 13 feet (5 meters) long, and about 4.9 meters (16 ft) wide from flipper to flipper. Unlike most modern turtles, Archelon did not have a solid shell, but instead had a skeletal framework supporting a leathery or bony carapace. They are commonly found in from the shoreline out to the continental shelf. Cod are native to the waters north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and around both coasts of Greenland in the western parts of the Atlantic Ocean. In the east it's found from the Bay of Biscay north to the Arctic Ocean, including the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, Sea of the Hebrides, areas around Iceland and the Barents Sea. The Atlantic Cod can grow to be about 6 feet long (two meters) and weigh roughly 200 pounds (100 kilograms) These are long lived fish, and some individuals can make it to 25 years. Its habitat ranges from the shoreline down to the continental shelf. Back in the 1990 several cod stocks collapsed in the 1990s, with populations falling to below 95% of their normal sizes. Even with a ban on fishing for them the populations have failed to recover. The Atlantic Cod is considered "vulnerable" and is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Atlantic Horseshoe Crab – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Atlantic Horseshoe Crab:

The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab is a arthropod of the Xiphosura, which are a group of marine chelicerates, which are a group of animals that are mostly extinct, and in fact there are only four recent living members. Limulus polyphemus, along with the other horseshoe crabs, have hardly changed in millions of years. As the name makes clear, this arthropod is found in the coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean. They feed on mollusks, annelid worms, and other invertebrates. The crabs have three main parts to their bodies: the head region or 'prosoma,' the abdominal region or 'opisthosoma' and the spine-like tail or 'telson'. Horseshoe crabs have the rare ability to regrow limbs they have lost. Banded Archerfish – Signed Fine Art Print

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Banded Archerfish:

The Banded Archerfish is a brackish water fish of the genus Toxotes. Larger specimens may be able to hit prey 6 ft 7 in to 9 ft 10 inches (2 to 3 meters) away. The name (binomial as well as common) refers to Sagittarius the archer, because of the unusual method banded archerfish use to capture prey. Banded archerfish are found in Indo-Pacific and Oceanian waters, generally in river mouths and mangrove estuaries. They move between fresh, salt, and brackish water over the course of their lifetime, though not to breed. Banded archerfish can reach a maximum length of 12 inches (30 centimeters) Average length though is about 8 inches (20 centimeters). Banded archerfish have mouths adapted to spit jets of water over distance, usually to knock prey into the water. The banded archerfish shoots the jet of water by raising its tongue against the roof of its mouth, forming a tube. The opercula then close quickly, pressurizing water along the tube. Most archerfish are able to spit at a range of 60 inches (150 centimeters.), When a prey is hit and falls into the water, the banded archerfish begins to move towards the place where it will land reaching it in less than one second.
