Information about the Snail Kite:
The Snail Kite is a smaller bird of prey and member of the family Accipitridae. They are about 14 to 19 in inches long, (36 to 48 centimeters) with a wingspan of 39–47 inches (99–120 centimeters). They weigh from 300 to 570 grams (11 to 20 oz). They are gregarious bird of freshwater wetlands, forming large winter roosts with dozens of other individuals. They range from the everglades in Florida and the surrounding Caribbean islands, south through Central America and into much of South America. As the name implies, this bird primarily feeds on Apple Snails, but it will also take other invertebrates such as crustaceans like crayfish. For this reason, the bird is considered an molluscivore.

Artist’s notes:
The Snail Kite was completed on 4.12.2012. I remember on a visit to Big Cypress National Reserve watching these handsome birds of prey patrol the swamp. While it was a few years ago, I realized at some point I would want draw one. I plan to add this illustration to a collection of everglades animals. The drawing is based on a photo by Tin Man on Flickr.
