The Javan, Sunda or Lesser One-Horned Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is one of only 5 extant species of rhinoceros and is the most endangered. Once the most widespread of the Asian rhinos, hunting, wars and habitat loss have reduced their numbers to a handful, and only by extensive conservation efforts has the species been saved – at least temporarily – from extinction. There are no known species living in any of the world’s zoos. These large land animals traditionally inhabited lowland rainforest, wet grasslands and flood plains.
