Information about the Ornate Box Turtle:
The Ornate Box Turtle, sometimes called the Western Box Turtle, is one of only two terrestrial turtles that inhabit the Great Plains of the US. They range from Indiana in the west to southern South Dakota and southeast Wyoming and south to Texas and Louisiana. These turtles prefer areas with sandy soils, dry prairies and oak savannahs. This turtle requires deep sandy soil to burrow into in order to hibernate for the winter. During the warm summer months the box turtle will stay near wooded edges in order to avoid overheating. It is the state reptile of Kansas.

The black and white line art version of the Ornate Box Turtle was completed in 2004 and the digital tinting was added in 2007. This was part of a series of three box turtles . As is stands, I’m slowly completed all of the North American species of these highly beautiful reptiles.

The Florida Box Turtle is a sub-species of the Eastern Box Turtle. It is a small to medium sized turtle and one of four box turtles found in Florida. The carapace is mostly darkish-black and is somewhat elongated compared to other box turtles. They are endemic to marshes, forests, swamp edges and open woodlands - they're even occasionally found in residential gardens. These reptiles are protected is it illegal to remove them from the wild.
