The United States is home to hundreds of species of mammals, ranging from smaller mammals such as mice, squirrel, chipmunk and shrew up to the very large mammals like elk, bison, moose and bear – which are found mostly in the Mid-Western and Western states. While most of the larger mammals have been extirpated from the states east of the Mississippi, many species are still found there and some of the larger ones – elk for example – have been re-introduced and have stable populations.
