Arapaima – Signed Fine Art Print
Information about the Arapaima:
The Arapaima - sometimes called the pirarucu or paiche, is a very large tropical freshwater fish native to the rivers, streams, lakes and floodplains and flooded rainforests of South America. It is considered a "living fossil" and is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, reaching lengths of over 6.6 feet (2 meters) and weighing over 220 pounds (110 kg.) Due to commercial fishing, as the Arapaima is a much sought after foot fish, very few large specimens can be found in the wild today. It is a top predator in it's environment feeding on other fish, crustaceans and even small mammals that might venture too close to the water. Because it breathes air, it is especially successful in hunting other fish when the waters recede, trapping other fish reliant on oxygen in the water. Deprived of their air they become sluggish and disoriented, making them easy prey for the Arapaima.
