Information about the Gaboon Viper:
The Gaboon Viper, is also called the Gaboon viper, butterfly adder, swampjack, Gaboon adder or viper is a venomous snake native to the rainforests and savannas of sub-Sahara Africa. It is a very heavy snake weighing about 20 pounds (8.5 kilograms) and growing to a length of 70 inches (174 centimeters) These snake are usually found in the jungles and woodlands at lower altitudes, although they are also encountered in farmlands, plantations and swamps. Because Gaboon Vipers are so large, they have no problem killing and swallowing prey as large as fully grown rabbits, which they strike with extreme accuracy and speed. They will inject venom into the prey with their impressive fangs (some of the largest of all the snakes in the world) and hold onto it until the animal dies. They are not aggressive snakes, so when a human is bitten it is nearly always because the snake has been accidentally stepped on. When a bite does occur it can cause death because of the potency of the venom.
