The Blue Dasher is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United States, Canada south through Mexico and Belize, the Bahamas and Cuba and it one of the mostly commonly encountered species of dragonfly in North America. Although the species name longipennis means "long wings", oddly enough the wings are not particularly long for a dragonfly. Females do, however, have a short abdomen that makes the wings look longer in comparison. Like other dragonfly species, it may eat hundreds of insects every day. Males are territorial, aggressively engaging with intruders both at feeding and at breeding sites.
