The Marbled Hatchetfish is small, ray-finned fish native to the tropical freshwaters of South America. They grow to be about 1.4 inches long (3.5 cm) The unusual shape of the fish - so named for it's resemblance to a hatchet - is thought to be a form of camouflage in mimicking a dead leaf. The fish spends most of it's time near the water's surface, adding to the illusion. These fish are very popular in the pet industry and are often kept in aquariums. They prefer softer, acidic water. They are omnivorous, feeding on small insects and plant matter. They are known to jump out of the water if startled, so if they are kept in an aquarium a secure lid on top is necessary.
