The Purple Finch is a smaller songbird and member of the Fringillidae, which include 24 or so different species of the world's finches. These birds grow to be about 4 inches long (15 centimeters) and weigh a little over 1 ounce (34 grams.) They are native to much of the eastern part of North America, as well as smaller areas on the West Coast and much of Canada. They are a very common sight at backyard birdfeeders. When they are not feeding in urban or rural areas, they can be found in various types of forests, open fields, meadows and brush areas where they feed on various plant matter such as seeds, berries and millet. They also eat small insects when they can catch them. The Purple Finch is the official state bird of New Hampshire.
