The Eastern Diamondback or Common Rattlesnake is a heavy-bodied venomous pit viper native to the southeastern parts of the United States, ranging from the coastal plain regions of southeastern North Carolina to eastern Louisiana , including all of Florida . This snake has the distinction of being the largest of the rattlesnake in the world, growing to sizes over 8 feet long. These vipers feed primarily on small mammals especially rabbits and rats, which they tend to kill by ambushing, injecting with venom then following the trail of the dying animal.
