The Rhinoceros Iguana is a species of ground dwelling lizard native to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. They grow to be about 24-54 inches (60-136 cm) They are found in a variety of tones and colors, from slate gray to brown. The popular name comes from the bony-plated horn-like growth at the snout of the iguana. These lizards are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers, berries and other fruits. The iguana is an important contributors to plant growth which is does by distributing the seeds of the fruits it consumes. While the iguana is considered threatened in much of it's native range, aggressive conservation projects have helped stabilize the population. It has also been re-introduced into areas where it has been previously extirpated.
