The Dark-Eyed Junco is a member of the family Emberizidae, which are typically known as buntings in the Old World and sparrows in the New World. They are very widespread over the entire North American continent. The Dark-eyed Junco is about 5.1 to 6.9 inches long (13 to 17.5 cm) with a wingspan of 7.1 to 9.8 inches (18 to 25 cm) They usually weigh about 0.63 to 1.1 ounces (18 to 30 grams) There are a number of sub-species and similar looking birds to the Dark-Eyed Junco that it can be tricky to identify the exact species when seen in the wild. Dark-eyed Juncos breed in coniferous or mixed-coniferous forests across Canada, the western U.S., and in the Appalachians. In the winter months they can be found in open woodlands, fields, parks, roadsides, and backyards. They generally feed on plant matter such as seeds, but will also eat a variety of insects and invertebrates during the breeding season.
