The Gaudy Sphinx Moth is a medium sized hawkmoth having a of wingspan about 4 5/16 - 4 3/4 inches (11 - 12 cm). This colorful moth is found mostly in the tropics and subtropics from northern South America, northwards through Central America and into the southern and southeastern United States. Occasionally they are found as far north as Michigan and even into Canada. Like other members of the family Sphingidae the caterpillars pupate in underground burrows.
