Great-Crested newt - also called the Northern Crested or Warty Newt - is native to marshy, damp areas near ponds and slow moving streams from Great Britain and Brittany in the west across much of Europe north of the Alps and the Black Sea. There are three recognized sub-species. While they are not considered endangered, their numbers have dropped in recent decades due to pollution and habitat loss. Because of this decline the newt in now protected throughout much of it's range and it is illegal to capture or harm them or disturb the habitat in which it lives. Adult newts grow to be about 6-6.5 inches long (12-16 cm.) The Marginated Tortoise or Margined Tortoise is native to the dry, arid regions of Greece, Italy and the Balkans in Southern Europe. It is the largest of the European tortoises, weighing up to 11 pounds (5 kg) and length of 14 inches (35 cm). This reptile was formally described by German naturalist Johann David Schoepf in 1789. The specific epithet "marginata" is a straightforward derivation from the Latin term for 'marginated'. The are three recognized subspecies.
