Information about the Atlantic Cod:

The Atlantic Cod is a benthopelagic fish that belongs to the family Gadidae. It is also commercially known as cod, codling or haberdine. They are commonly found in from the shoreline out to the continental shelf. Cod are native to the waters north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and around both coasts of Greenland in the western parts of the Atlantic Ocean. In the east it's found from the Bay of Biscay north to the Arctic Ocean, including the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, Sea of the Hebrides, areas around Iceland and the Barents Sea. The Atlantic Cod can grow to be about 6 feet long (two meters) and weigh roughly 200 pounds (100 kilograms) These are long lived fish, and some individuals can make it to 25 years. Its habitat ranges from the shoreline down to the continental shelf. Back in the 1990 several cod stocks collapsed in the 1990s, with populations falling to below 95% of their normal sizes. Even with a ban on fishing for them the populations have failed to recover. The Atlantic Cod is considered "vulnerable" and is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
