Information about the Long-Fined Pilot Whale:

The Long-Fined Pilot Whale is one of three sub-species belonging to the genus Globicephala. It is a member of the oceanic dolphin family, although like the Orca or Killer Whale it is more whale-like in it's behavior. They are wide-ranging, medium-sized animals with a stocky, sturdy body. Their head has a large bulbous or square-like "melon". Females grow to be 12 feet long (3.7 meters). Males  are somewhat larger at 15 feet (4.6 meters)  An adult whale weighs 3,600 to 7,000 pounds (1.8 to 3.5 short tons.) They are sometimes called "Blackfish". There are two populations known of - one in the Northern Hemisphere in the North Atlantic, North and Baltic Seas. The other lives in Antarctic waters, covering the entire continental coastal areas. While their remote location makes guesses into their population difficult, these whales are protected under several international treaties. The poster is printed on matte, museum-quality paper with Giclée printing quality: • Paper thickness: 10.3 mil • Paper weight: 5.6 oz/y² (192 g/m²) • Opacity: 94% Buy a Digital Download
