Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels are small rodents that are widely distributed over grasslands and prairies of North America. They are also called the striped gopher, leopard ground squirrel and squinney. They grow to about 6.75–11.5 inches in length (170–297 mm) with tail about 2.5–5.25 inches long (60–132 mm) weighing about 3.8–9.5 ouches (110–270 g) They are usually only active during the daytime hours, and at the warmest part of the day. They are opportunistic feeders, and will eat a variety of food including various plant matters and nuts, berries, insects and even other mammals such as shrews and mice.
