The Long-Tailed duck - also called the Oldsquaw (although this name is less commonly used as of late as it has negative connotations with American Indians- is a medium-sized sea duck. They are members of the Anatidae family. Their name comes for the remarkably long tail the birds possess. Male are about 19-22" (48-56 cm) long (not including the tail )with the females being slightly smaller 15-17" (38-43 cm). Long-tailed ducks reside in a variety of habitats. Generally, they winter in the open ocean or large lakes and summer in pools or lakes in the tundra These ducks breed in Alaska and Arctic Canada. Winters along coasts from Bering Sea south to California, from Labrador south to Carolinas, along portions of Gulf Coast, and on Great Lakes.
