Information about the Periodical Cicada:
Magicicada is the genus of the 13 and 17 year Periodical Cicada which are native to the eastern United States. They are sometimes called "17 year locusts" but they are not actually locusts, which belong to a different order. Adult cicada are usually about 1-1.5 inches (2.4 to 3.3 centimeters) which the females being slightly larger than males. While cicadas don't sting or bite, their proboscis can inflict a painful pierce if it comes in contact with human skin. While cicadas are fairly common when they emerge, they are more often seen than heard, as they're usually far up in the trees and out of most people's sight.
