The Black Grouper - also called the black rockfish, bonaeci arara, and marbled rockfish - is a large member of the family Serranidae which are the sea basses and groupers. They can grow to be about 60 inches long (150 cm) and weigh 220 pounds (100 kg) They are generally found in and around rocky coral reefs, although they can occasionally venture out into the open ocean. The Black Grouper can be found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts, USA, in the north to southern Brazil, but is particularly associated with the southern Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Due to overfishing the species is close to becoming endangered.
