The California Sister Butterfly - so named for it's black and white coloring resembling a nuns habit - is a member of the genus Adelpha. These insects are native to the woodlands of California northwards up into Oregon. Generally, these butterflies prefer to feed on fallen fruit instead of suckling nectar. They're often found on damp mud getting a drink of water. They are large with a wingspan of about 3-4 inches.
