The Spiny Brittle star is a member of the family Ophiothricidae, which ophiurid brittle stars within the infraorder Gnathophiurina. All have arms with delicate translucent, thorny spines. The arms are flexible in all directions. Spiny Brittle Stars are found from Northern California down the coasts southwards to Peru. They are also found in Galapagos Islands. These invertebrates occur in incredible numbers on the seafloor. In kelp forests near La Jolla in southern California, millions of them may carpet the seafloor in layers up to an inch thick.
