Information about the Persian Onager:
The Persian Onagers are one of six sub-species of wild ass that once were common across Central Asia and the Middle East. Fewer than 700 animals remain in the wild, most of these in Iran. Because of their remote location and travel in Iran generally restricted to outsides, determining their population is increasingly difficult. These wild asses face several threats, including poaching, habitat loss, drought and inbreeding due to the small population. Sometimes the term "onager" is reserved specifically for this subspecies. There are very few onagers in captivity or in zoos, however in 2012 there was a rare foal born to the National Zoo in Washington, DC.
