The Black-Headed Grosbeak is a North American songbird and member of the family Cardinalidae - which are the cardinals. These are birds that migrate, from their nesting areas from much of the western US and southwestern Canada down to central Mexico. It grows to be about 6.5 to 7.75 inches long (18-19 cm.) While sometimes seen in urban areas and backyards these birds are more commonly associated with deciduous and mixed wooded areas, usually with large trees and thick bushes. They are omnivorous, feeding on various plant matter such as seeds, berries fruit as well as insects and small invertebrates. They are one of the few birds that can safely digest the poisonous Monarch Butterfly.
