Information about the Red Wolf:
The Red Wolf is a North American canid. This mammal grows to be roughly 26–31 inches (66–79 centimeters) at the shoulder with a total length of 44–65 inches (111–165 centimeters) with the tail of 12–17 in (30–43 centimeters). The body weight can range from 35 to 90 pounds (16 to 41 kilograms) but on average the wolf is about 54 pounds (24.5 kilograms) Unlike the more common Gray Wolf, Red Wolves are smaller and more slender, and are sometimes mistaken for coyotes. These animals once roamed throughout the southeastern United States. Before hunting, loss of habitat and control programs drove the Red Wolf to the brink of extinction, habitats included forests, swamps and coastal prairies. It was the apex predator of it's ecosystem, feeding on rodents, deer, rabbits and other smaller mammals.) The Red Wolf is considered critically endangered, as attempts were made to exterminate this species as the US was populated. But now there are intensive efforts to reintroduce them back into the wild in North Carolina.
