The Southern Right Whale is one of three species of right whale, which are baleen whales. This type of whale is characterized by having baleen plates which they use to filter food from water, rather than using teeth. Adult Southern Right Whale female grow to be about 50 feet long (15 meters) and can weigh up to 46 long tons or 532 long tones (47 tones) As their name suggests, these animals are unable to cross the warm equatorial waters are only found in the Southern Hemisphere, rarely going north of the eastern most tip of Brazil. Unlike many species of whale, the Southern Right Whale is considered endangered by conservation groups, and their number appear to be in the range of 7,500 to 10,000 individuals in the wild.
