Stegosaurus is a genus of stegosaurid armored dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period. It lived in areas that are now western North America. The name means 'roof lizard.' Stegosaurus, one of the many dinosaurs first collected was originally named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877 from remains recovered from a dig north of Morrison, Colorado. These were very large animals, Averaging around 30 feet (9 meters) long and 14 feet tall (4 meters.) They were herbivores who fed exclusively on plant materials.
