Information about the California Whipsnake:

The California Whipsnake - also called the Striped Racer - is a colubrid snake found in a wide range of habitat types including open desert, oak woodland, pine forest, chaparral, and associated open landscapes. This species is represented by two subspecies: the chaparral whipsnake (M. l. lateralis) and the Alameda whipsnake. These slender snake usually feed on a variety of prey including insects, lizards, snakes, birds, and small mammals, although they tend to favor lizards, which they will grab with their mouths and swallow it whole. This species commonly moves over and through brush and trees in order to avoid predation and to capture prey. The subspecies M. l. euryxanthus is considered threatened by the state of California.
