Western Grebes are the largest of the North American grebes. It is often found in large inland lakes, saltwater beaches and bays, and coastal freshwater marshes during the breeding season. It is know for a spectaculars courtship display, where both birds will rear up on their legs and splash lightly across the water's surface. Western Grebes feed on fish, small crustaceans, invertebrates and amphibians. They are highly gregarious, wintering in large flocks and nest colonies, although during the summer months they are often encountered in small numbers or even solitary individuals.
