Information about the Zebra Longwing Butterfly:
The Zebra Longwing Butterfly is a member of the family Nymphalidae.It is normally found over large areas of North, South and Central America.In North America, it is mostly found in the southern states of Florida, Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia. While it tends to prefer wooded thickets and hardwood forests it is also found in urban areas and gardens, wherever it can find food. The caterpillar of the species feeds on the nectar of flowers, such as the passionflower, whereas the adults eat both nectar and the pollen of flowers which is thought to be unique in butterfly species. This behavior is believed to contribute to the Zebra Longwing's longer than normal lifespan of six months. In 1996 it was declared the official butterfly for the state of Florida in the USA.
