The Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) is the largest owl of North and Central America, and one of the largest in the world. They’re found throughout much of Alaska through Canada, down into the Sierra Mountains in California, also in Northern Europe and Asia. Because it is so silent when it flies, in some areas it is also called “Phantom of the North.”
