Owls are solitary, nocturnal birds of prey – also known as “raptors.” They are known for their exceptional hearing, silent flight, and forward-facing eyes for binocular vision, allowing them to hunt effectively at night. Owls prey on small animals, insects, and fish. The two types of owls are divided into “true owls” (Strigidae) and barn owls (Tytonidae). They’re found globally except Antarctica. The Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi) is the world’s smallest owl, about the size of a sparrow (5-6 inches tall) with the largest owl considered to be the Blakiston’s Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni)
