The Black Vulture - also called the American Black Vulture - is large bird of prey native from the southeastern United States to Central Chile and Uruguay in South America. It's wingspan is 52-66 inches (1.33-1.67 meters.) While the Black Vulture generally feeds on carrion, it will also eat eggs or kill newly born animals. It is found in a wide range of habitats, but is most commonly encountered near garbage dumps or other areas where food can be easily scavenged. While providing a critical need in the environment - cleaning up waste and dead animal - in large numbers Black Vulture can actually damage and endangered the health of an ecosystem with their waste, which can harm trees and other vegetation. In the United States is it illegal to kill, capture or possess a Black Vulture.
