Information about the Black Vulture:
The Black Vulture – also called the American Black Vulture – is large bird of prey native from the southeastern United States to Central Chile and Uruguay in South America. It’s wingspan is 52-66 inches (1.33-1.67 meters.) While the Black Vulture generally feeds on carrion, it will also eat eggs or kill newly born animals. It is found in a wide range of habitats, but is most commonly encountered near garbage dumps or other areas where food can be easily scavenged. While providing a critical need in the environment – cleaning up waste and dead animal – in large numbers Black Vulture can actually damage and endangered the health of an ecosystem with their waste, which can harm trees and other vegetation. In the United States is it illegal to kill, capture or possess a Black Vulture.

Artist’s notes:
The Black Vulture was completed on 4.16.2014. I first saw these large and imposing birds as I entered the Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida. Several of them sat forebodingly on a tree just outside the park. Needless to say, the trip in the part was a fantastic experience, but I’ve never gotten that image out of my head. I’ve been wanting to add this species to the image library, and when I found a great reference photo by by Flickr friend Luis Villablanca (who was kind enough to allow me to use it) I went ahead and created this drawing.
