The Black Falcon is a large to medium-sized falcon native to much of the continent of Australia. Coloration is uniform dark brown to sooty black; juveniles are generally darker than adults; feathers under the wing are two-tone (flight feathers slightly paler); adults may have an evident dark stripe below the eye. It is one of three species of Falconidae native to Australia - the other being the Brown Falcon and the Gray Falcon. Like all falcon, Falco subniger is a formidable hunter, feeding on small mammals and other birds. It will also eat large insects and carrion.
