Information about the Black Falcon:

The Black Falcon is a large to medium-sized falcon native to much of the continent of Australia. Coloration is uniform dark brown to sooty black; juveniles are generally darker than adults; feathers under the wing are two-tone (flight feathers slightly paler); adults may have an evident dark stripe below the eye. It is one of three species of Falconidae native to Australia – the other being the Brown Falcon and the Gray Falcon. Like all falcon, Falco subniger is a formidable hunter, feeding on small mammals and other birds. It will also eat large insects and carrion. It is very widespread and is not considered endangered

Artist’s notes:

The Black Falcon was completed on 12.28.2014. The more animals I draw, the more I realize how many countless thousands of species I didn’t know existed. When putting a collage together of falcons of the world, I knew I wanted to include more than European and North America species. I learned of the Black Falcon – native to Australia – and knew I had to draw it. The illustration is based on a photo by Bill Strong and was used with his permission.
