The Great Gray Owl is the largest owl of North and Central America, and one of the largest in the world. They can reach sizes up to 28 inches tall with a wingspan of five feet. They're found throughout much of Alaska through Canada, down into the Sierra in California. They're also found in northern Europe and Asia. They prefer forested habitats, such as mixed conifer and red fir or similar trees. These owls generally only fly short distances, usually close to the ground. They hunt mainly during the early morning and later in the afternoon. They feed on rodents, but will occasionally prey on birds, amphibians, snakes and insects.
