Description

Owls of World Poster

There are over 200 recognized owl species worldwide. They are classified into two main families: approximately 20 species of barn and bay owls (family Tytonidae) and over 200 species of “true” or typical owls (family Strigidae). These birds of prey are primarily nocturnal, although there are few diurnal species. All owls are known for their silent flight, exceptional low-light vision and keen hearing. Their round or heart-shaped facial discs act like satellite dishes, funneling sound waves to their ears. As formidable predators, owls skillfully hunt small mammals, insects, birds and occasionally fish.

For more information on owls visit: Owl Research InstituteNational Audubon Society, and BBC Earth as they offer guides, species lists, and identification tips.
