$19.95$27.95

Information about the Notre Dame Cathedral:

Notre Dame de Paris (meaning Our Lady of Paris) is a large cathedral situated on the banks of the Seine River on the eastern part of the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement. It is generally considered one of the best example of French gothic architecture in Europe. The groundbreaking is believed to have started in 1163, but the cathedral wasn't completed until 1345. The cathedral has gone through many difficult transitions over the years, including periods of neglect, occasionally even being used for such mundane tasks as housing livestock or for storage. The cathedral also suffered vandalism at the hands of radicals during the French revolution in the 1790s. Today, though, the buildings stands in it's original glory, thanks to an extensive and painstaking restoration supervised by the French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. It is one of the most easily recognizable buildings in the world and one of the main tourist attractions in Paris. The profile of the cathedral was raised even higher when Victor Hugo wrote "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", published in 1831.

The construction was also hindered by the Franco-Prussian war. But despite the setbacks and political upheaval, the building was completed and dedicated in 1875. The style of the building was extremely influential, and many notable buildings - especially other opera houses - were heavily influenced by Garnier's remarkable vision. The legend of the storied building was furthered by the novel "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux.

The cathedral was the fourth building to occupy the site and three previous cathedrals had been variously destroyed before construction began. The architect was Sir Christopher Wren, who is credited with building on 50 churches in London following the Great Fire of 1666. The building was the tallest in London until 1962. Information about the Saint Paul's Cathedral:

The Cathedral of Saint Paul, also called the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul, is a Classical Revival styled church in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was built upon a large hill (called Cathedral Hill) looking over the downtown area of Saint Paul and across the 94 Interstate Highway towards the Saint Paul's Cathedral. It was designed by the prominent architects Emmanuel Louis Masqueray and Whitney Warren, after Archbishop John Ireland directed it's building on the site. Masqueray himself died in 1917, and only managed to complete a handful of designs of the interior. The design was inspired by French Renaissance architecture. The exterior walls are granite from Saint Cloud, and the interior walls are American Travertine, from Mankato. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

$19.95$27.95

Information about the Spoonbridge and Cherry:

The Spoonbrige & Cherry - also called the Spoon & Cherry - is a large piece of 3D artwork located in the MinneapolisSpoonbridge and Cherry. It was completed between 1985-1989 by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. It was a gift to the gardens from Frederick R. Weisman in honor of his parents; William and Mary Weisman. The materials used in the making of the sculpture is aluminum, paint and stainless steel. The size is approximately 354" tall, 618" long, and 162" wide. Oldenburg is known for his oversized versions of ordinary objects, and has other pieces in the Walker Art Museum, including one of a giant overturned bag of french fries. While the design of the sculpture is due mostly to Oldenburg, his wife helped develop the piece and added the element of the cherry. The spoon weighs about 5,8000 pounds and the cherry is 1,2000. The items were created in a shipbuilding yard in New England. The sculpture became an immediate success and anchor point of the drawing, while the image of the piece became a recognizable image for the city of Minneapolis and the impressive gardens filled with wonderful works of art.
