The Northern Bobwhite Quail - also called the Virginia Quail in it's home range - is a small ground dwelling bird native to the agricultural fields, grassland, open woodland areas, roadsides and wood edges of North America, throughout much of the central United States to the East Coast. They get their name from the distinctive territorial call the bird makes (you can listen here .) There are several sub-species of this bird. This bird is extremely popular as a game bird, but drastic declines in the bird's population (in large part caused by invasive fire ants) so conservation groups are now listing them as "near threatened."
