Information about the Northern Bobwhite Quail:

The Northern Bobwhite Quail – also called the Virginia Quail in it’s home range – is a small ground dwelling bird native to the agricultural fields, grassland, open woodland areas, roadsides and wood edges of North America, throughout much of the central United States to the East Coast. They get their name from the distinctive territorial call the bird makes (you can listen here .) There are several sub-species of this bird. This bird is extremely popular as a game bird, but drastic declines in the bird’s population (in large part caused by invasive fire ants) so conservation groups are now listing them as “near threatened.” The Northern Bobwhite is the official state game bird of Georgia and Tennessee.

Artist’s notes:

The Northern Bobwhite Quail was completed on 7.2.2012. This bird was a lot of fun to drawn, as are the other quail I’ve drawn (Gambel’s and California) The reason this quail was added to the image library as it is the state bird/game bird of three US states. It was challenging to get the mottled look of the bird’s feathers, but I think it turned out pretty well.
