Iowa hosts around 110 butterfly species, including common ones like the Monarch, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, as well as sulphurs, fritillaries, admirals and emperors. The caterpillars chew on specific “host” leaves like milkweed, nettles, or clover, while adult butterflies use their proboscis to sip sugary nectar from flowers like goldenrod, asters, coneflowers, and sunflowers.
