New York State hosts nearly 120 butterfly species, including iconic species like the Monarch and other beauties such as the Red-spotted Purple/White Admiral which are the official butterfly of the state. Hotspots in parks like Central Park, Jamaica Bay, and the Adirondacks are common places for butterflies to be seen. Butterflies in New York can be found in a wide range of natural and man-made environments that offer abundant food sources (nectar plants for adults, host plants for caterpillars) and shelter. These environments span from dense urban green spaces to extensive natural preserves.
