Information about the Beluga Whale:
The Beluga Whale is an arctic or sub-arctic small toothed whale. It is mammal from the order of cetacean and is one of only two members of the Monodontidae family (the other being the Narwhal.) They are large animals with males reaching up to 18 feet in length and weighing between 2500 and 3500 pounds. They are sometimes called the “Sea Canary” because of their habit of chattering in a high pitched frequency. These marine mammals inhabit the frigid waters along the coasts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland and Russia. They are considered “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Artist’s notes:
The Beluga Whale was completed on 10.7.09. I remember seeing these mammals at the Minnesota Zoo growing up. At that time I don’t believe they were very common. If I recall correctly they had a lot of problems with them and the exhibit was eventually closed. Checking their website now it seems that they’ve been gone for some time now. The drawing is based on a photo by Cat Smith.
